The retail giant Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
In a significant move, Walmart has started implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated as of early November, according to a company memo distributed to employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced widespread backlash for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, whereas some search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings indicate chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and potential scalper target.
With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
