The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.

It might not have been at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”

The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Peaceful Retirement

This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.

“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”

Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
