The former England manager Reveals Focus on Mentoring Young People Rather than Football Management
The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to recreate the unique sense of purpose he felt as the national team coach.
Southgate suggested his aim to focus his energy toward supporting young people and countering what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently existing in the country.
Embracing New Avenues Outside of The Sport
Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding rumors linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and other leagues.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
Commitment to Mentorship
Ahead of the publication of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate shared that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for teenagers, applying experiences from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
Southgate believes that his experience leading the national team, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.
“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”
Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation
Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”
He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Common Ground Above Conflict
Southgate stressed that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the cultural focus often highlights conflict.
“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”
Southgate’s new release, Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on guidance and national identity drawn from his distinguished professional journey.
