Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Post

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

“What a appalling and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

Some Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the killing of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
