New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
