People have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the morning session ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the discussions are "tough and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until all the hostages return not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.

Outside the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israelis want the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, medics reported.
