Heavy Downpours Worsen Situation for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Alert
Intense rains over the past week have intensified the precarious living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip, as reported by relief agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Poses Severe Dangers
A representative described the weather overnight as "awful", with precipitation so heavy that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was truly horrendous for the families. The storms were so powerful... And the winds were so powerful," noted the official.
Authorities voice significant worry that minors living in tents in soaked clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Fatalities and Widespread Loss
Health authorities have reported that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have died in building collapses due to the severe weather.
Further statements suggest a greater fatality count. Authorities stated that several residential buildings had collapsed completely and dozens had been partly destroyed.
- Nearly 55,000 families harmed by rains.
- More than 40 official safe spaces severely flooded.
- Countless residents required to move once more.
Assistance Operations Considered Not Enough
Agencies have stepped up deliveries of tarpaulins, blankets and clothing following the ceasefire started, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"We are working relentlessly to bring in that relief and to distribute it, but the scale of the needs is so vast that we continue to see thousands of families and minors who are truly suffering each evening," warned one representative.
Ongoing Issues and Agreement Provisions
The second phase of the agreement includes proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of personnel, and other terms.
Aid organizations have stressed the imperative for "greater and continuous relief to address urgent and future needs."
The war was sparked by an attack in the autumn of 2023. Following campaigns have led to a significant number of fatalities in the area, as per medical figures.
