Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent acronym came to light a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to treat a young patient who has lost their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities disputes these allegations, just as it denies everything it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
