Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The clip, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past served in military or intelligence positions.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The video message seemed to provoke a furious reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified announcement censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our country with great patriotism and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The lawmakers who participated in the video also published a statement.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who care for this United States and took an oath to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "Every American must unite and denounce the president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."
More Political Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
