Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the main group to embark on their independent quest, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the actions of episode 3 make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose death started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, striking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the group access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This means them no alternative but to journey toward Timmony in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to form the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Viewers can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
