Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
